Meet the Passlayer

If you've read the architecture blogs, you'll know that TOPdesk is moving towards a (micro) service-oriented architecture. This architecture is full redesign of the TOPdesk product so that you benefit from new improvements in technology. However, redesigning the architecture also results in a number of challenges. One such challenge is the need to rebuild some of the basic building blocks from scratch. These components were built into the TOPdesk application, such as authentication, session management, authorization and logging, but need to be separated to offer the components as services.

The Passlayer is the first block that is being rebuilt. But what is the Passlayer? The Passlayer is a gateway service that all requests from the outside need to pass through access TOPdesk services. It takes care of authentication and session management. Read on to find out how you benefit from the Passlayer.

TOPdesk Virtual Appliance - Release plan

The release plan in this blog post is outdated. See Revisting the Virtual Appliance release plan for the most recent release plan.

Previously, we wrote about the new TOPdesk installation process. Some of our new features have been released in compliance with our software's new services architecture which is currently only available on SaaS. We’ll be replacing the installer with a Virtual Appliance to provide those features to on-premises customers as well, without requiring complicated configuration. We are now close to releasing the first version of the Appliance. The picture below shows the release plan. Keep reading to find out what we’ve got to offer in the next few months.

In this blog, you'll find out the reasoning behind the change, how it will affect you and when you can expect it to take place.

Construction in our codebase: keeping up with the times

At TOPdesk, we are serious about our product. One way we are showing this is by staying up-to-date with current technologies. If nothing ever changed, you would be less interested in using our software. Eventually TOPdesk wouldn’t exist anymore. A while ago we started planning for large reconstruction projects in the codebase of TOPdesk.

The future of TOPdesk’s end user-app

Our vision of the Self-Service Portal is that it is easy to use and covers the needs of our users. We explored whether a separate mobile experience with the end user app would match that vision. However, in practice the app did not meet expectations. Therefore, we have decided to halt the development of the app and look for another solution. We believe that the solution lies in the SSP itself.
